Most people know that Dysons are powerful (and expensive) vacuums, but you may not know that this newest in the Dyson line has the strongest most powerful suction of any vacuum cleaner on the market today. There is really no comparison with other brands in this regard. In other words, if it’s on your floor, the DC 65 will suck it up. Because of this and its numerous other bells and whistles, we rate it number one in our top ten list.

Which one should I choose?

While this popular vacuum comes in three different models, it’s important to know before you decide on which one to buy that they are the same base model machine. The only difference lies in the accessories included. All of the 3 come with a combination tool and a stair tool, and the Animal and Animal Complete models include a turbine tool specialized for picking up cat and dog hair as well as a soft dusting brush. The Complete model comes with additional tools including a stiff brush, multi angle brush, a bag for the accessories and a Zorb tool. What is a Zorb tool? It’s meant for working in carpet cleaning powder to get a deeper clean.

Is it easy to use for regular cleaning?

The short answer is… yes. First, at a total weight of just over 17 pounds, this full size machine feels more like a lightweight. If you’ve ever had to drag, push, pull and generally fight with a vacuum cleaner to get it to go around tight corners or up and down the stairs, you’ll really appreciate this feature

Second, the incorporated hose is long enough so you won’t need to drag the whole unit around with you. The hose extends to over 15 feet, so you really can leave the vacuum at the base of the stairs and just use the hose with attachments as you go up to clean.

Third, it’s low-profile. This means not only will it go under your kitchen cabinets without getting stuck; it will also get under most of your furniture, meaning less stress on your back moving things around. While it does not lie down flat, if you have a difficult to reach area, this is where the long hose and tools come in especially handy.

One complaint about many vacuums with tools and an extension hose (like the Shark Rotator) is that they have a tendency to want to tip over when you stretch out the hose. We’re happy to say in every review of the DC 65, this is not a complaint we’ve ever seen. In fact, user reviews comment repeatedly on the stability of this model when they compare it to others they’ve owned, yet another reason it’s rated so high.

How well does it work?

In one user review, the buyer commented that this popular machine will indeed pick up Cheerios and other cereal, but it’s so powerful you may not even need to take them out of the box for it to do so!

The flagship bagless Dyson ball technology does a truly amazing job on even the deepest pile carpets and moves to hardwood floors effortlessly due to the self-adjusting head. Since the brush roll easily turns off, you don’t have to worry about it scattering bits (like cat litter) around your bare floors or scratching them. Everything just goes up into the easy-to-empty dirt canister.
As for smaller jobs like cleaning area rugs, many of us have used a vacuum that worked great on the wood floor, and then tried to eat our throw rugs. This doesn’t seem to be a concern with the DC65. User reviews state that the Dyson brush assembly essentially floats over the area rugs, so they still get a good cleaning, but you won’t need to pull them out of the brush head.

As far as picking up pet hair from floors and furniture (plus lamp shades using the brush tool), you’ll have no problem at all. Bottom line: If you have pets, you won’t regret buying this vacuum. We recommend getting the Animal or Animal Complete to get all the pet hair-sucking tools to make your job easier.

How well does it work for allergies?

Like every Dyson vacuum, this one is certified by the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America. While a HEPA filter is a great thing to have in your home vacuum cleaner, sometimes it’s just not enough. Many small particles of dust, dirt and dander can still sneak through the filter. This is where Dyson’s well-sealed system comes into play. Not only are those allergens trapped in the HEPA filter, they can’t escape back into the air when the entire system is sealed.

How much does it cost?

We all know Dysons aren’t cheap, but with this type of performance, you can expect to pay a hefty price. While you’re going to pay quite a bit at any major retailer or even directly from the manufacturer, you can find discounts on these popular machines by buying online. As a matter of fact, Amazon currently has the DC65 for about $100 off, and you still get the 5-year parts and labor warranty!

Final Thoughts

This is a top of the line vacuum cleaner. Whichever of the 3 models you choose, there’s every chance you’ll love it for many years to come. While it won’t be an inexpensive purchase, it really should be considered more of an investment for the money spent. This isn’t by any means a throw-away vacuum. It’s built to last for years and has a warranty to back that up.

If you need a more affordable model, try finding an older reconditioned Dyson model (Amazon has some great deals on these), but if it’s in your budget, buy this one. It’s truly a great value and will make your life SO much easier!

If you think the DC 65 will bust your budget, you may want to take a look at the Dyson DC40, our second choice from Dyson. It has slightly less power but still more than other vacs. It is also a bit smaller overall, but it’s still powerful and versatile enough to clean your home for years to come, and at a significantly lower price, it’s worth a look.
